Frustrating situation: one skunk is captured, released, and another settles in the same place during the week. This is a sign that the burrow is attractive (dry, safe, close to a food source) and that the root cause must be eliminated. Action: capture and then permanently close the burrow with a trellis sunk 30 cm deep, check that the food sources (bins, composter) are secure, eliminate all openings under galleries and sheds. <\/p>\n

What to do after capture<\/h2>\n

Release in place outside a building<\/h3>\n

Carry the covered cage at least 50 metres from the point of capture, open the door at a distance, wait for the animal to come out spontaneously. A cage 75 cm long by 25 cm wide is suitable for the majority of adult skunks (weight 2 to 5 kg). The ideal model is a single-door cage with an all-metal bottom to resist scratches. Cages larger than 80 cm increase the risk of the skunk turning over and watering. Covering the cage entirely with a tarpaulin as soon as it is installed reduces the animal’s stress and limits the risk of throwing: skunks water mainly out of fear, so the darkness soothes them. <\/p>\n

What bait best attracts a skunk?<\/h3>\n

Three baits give the best results: canned sardines in oil (the fishy smell carries far away at night), peanut butter spread on a piece of bread or lettuce leaf, and soaked cat food. Skunks are omnivorous and opportunistic, so almost any smelly food works. Place the bait at the very bottom of the cage to force the animal fully in before triggering the trap.     For skin and clothing: Rinse immediately with cold water, then apply a mixture of 1 litre of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1\/4 cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of dish soap. Leave on for 5 minutes then rinse. For eyes: rinse for 15 minutes with warm water and consult a doctor if irritation persists. Clothes can require several washes: add baking soda to the cycle. Tomato juice is ineffective, that’s a myth. <\/p>\n

    When should you avoid trapping a skunk?<\/h3>\n

    From the end of April to the end of August, females raise their litter of 4 to 6 young born in May after a gestation period of 60 to 77 days.
