Not because the owner was slow to react, but because he reacted when the animal was already settled, and often at the time of year when it is most difficult to get it out legally. A well-understood pest calendar solves a good part of the problem, because each species on the South Shore follows a tight cycle, documented species by species in the Quebec government’s wildlife files, and this cycle decides what we are allowed to do.

What a pest calendar changes in concrete terms for you

Let’s take the most mundane case. A skunk settles under a porch in April. The owner realizes this in June, closes the opening with plywood, and finds himself two weeks later with a smell that no product can get rid of, because the young have died behind the board. The young skunks are born around the end of May and don’t start coming out until the beginning of July. The gesture was good. The date was wrong.

The same reasoning applies to almost all species that enter a building. There is, for each one, a period when exclusion works properly, and a period when it creates a problem worse than the one it solves. Knowing these windows is worth more than a good product.

From October to February, rodents take up all the space

The cold doesn’t kill mice, it pushes them inside. From the first nights below 10 degrees, openings the size of a dime become doors. A cracked foundation wall, a poorly sealed duct passage, a worn garage door sill: the list of weak points is short and always the same from one house to another.

Below 10 degrees, an opening the size of a dime is enough for a mouse.

This is also the period when grey squirrels seek shelter, after the fall young have dispersed. They do not hibernate. They depend on the reserves buried in their territory, which they find by smell under about thirty centimetres of snow, and a heated attic provides them with an ideal point of support for the bad season. The ministry recommends a metal fence with a mesh of one centimetre or less to block the accesses, and a clearance of at least three metres between the branches and the building.

These four months are the best window of the year for exclusion work on raccoons and skunks: no litters in the walls, no risk of walling up a family. Our sites to close entry points are concentrated there, and it’s no coincidence.

March to June, the season when sealing becomes a mistake

Everything changes when the thaw goes. Groundhogs come out of hibernation in February or March, about 30 per cent thinner, and attack anything edible around a yard. Raccoons give birth in April or May. Grey squirrels from mid-April to August, with one or two litters depending on the year. Skunks around the end of May.

A maternity colony does not dislodge between mid-June and early July: the young are not yet flying.

Bats deserve a special mention. Births take place from mid-June to early July, and the little brown bat is designated a threatened species in Quebec, after a decline of 78 to 100 percent of populations since 2010 due to white-nose syndrome. A single female captures up to 600 insects in an hour. Touching a colony during the maternity period is not only counterproductive, it is an act on a species in difficulty, and exclusion must wait. Our bat capture interventions respect this constraint, even if it means postponing a file for six weeks.

Since 2026, a regulatory layer has been added that no one had seen coming. With 220 confirmed cases of raccoon rabies identified since December 2024, the government has banned the movement of raccoons, striped skunks, red and grey foxes and coyotes in a list of municipalities that grows with each order. The one of August 7, 2026 added 53 in Montérégie, Estrie and Centre-du-Québec. Before capturing anything, check what the law still allows you to move.

July to September, it’s all about the roof

The young people are out, the spans are dispersed, and the work window reopens. It’s time for work at height: soffits, roof vents, flashings, cornices.

On the bird side, a legal distinction changes the game. The European starling and the house sparrow belong to families excluded from the protection of the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994, unlike swallows, blackbirds and the vast majority of native species, whose active nests cannot be touched. This difference decides what a professional is allowed to remove and when. Our bird capture and soffit closure work always starts from this verification.

At the end of August, wasps reach their maximum population and aggressiveness, at the precise time when families spend the most time outside. September marks the beginning of the opposite movement: rodents start looking for shelter again, and the cycle starts again.

This month of September deserves our attention, because it concentrates the two logics. On the one hand, summer work can still be completed in good weather on a dry roof. On the other hand, rodent pressure is already rising, without being visible inside. This is the only time of the year when an inspection allows both to note the damage of the past season and to close the accesses before the October wave. Homeowners who call in September pay for an intervention. Those who call in November pay for an intervention and decontamination.

Month

Species under surveillance

What’s happening

What can be done

January, February

Mice, rats, grey squirrels

Heat-seeking, activity in walls

Complete exclusion, decontamination

March

Groundhogs, raccoons

Coming out of hibernation, matings

Last window before giving birth

April, May

Raccoons, Grey Squirrels

Calving and rearing of young

Inspection only, no sealing

June

Bats, skunks

Maternity, births

Identification of accesses, postponed work

July

Skunks, starlings

Emergence of young, end of broods

Resumption of exclusion, removal of unprotected nests

August

Wasps, Squirrels, Birds

Population Peak, Second Litter

Roofing and Soffit Work

September

Rodents, raccoons

Seeking shelter before the cold Preventive

caulking, smoke test

October, November

Mice, field mice, rats

Mass entry into buildings

Exclusion, supervised baiting, inspection

December

Rodents installed

Nesting in insulation

Decontamination, insulation replacement

What this calendar does not say, and which matters just as much

A biological cycle gives the right time. It does not give the real state of a building. Two neighbouring houses, built in the same year by the same contractor, do not have the same weaknesses twenty years later, because one has a hedge glued to the foundation wall and the other does not.

Contrary to what we read, the season is never enough to decide alone. It indicates when to act without breaking the law or aggravating the situation. The rest comes from the inspection: where the animal has been going, for how long, what it has damaged, what it has left in the insulation. Our attic decontamination files almost all start with a homeowner who is convinced that the problem was a few weeks old.

One last thing about the memory of the place. A soiled attic remains attractive to the next species long after the first occupant has left, because the smelly markings last for months. Closing without sanitizing is like preparing next year’s file.

The questions we get asked most often

What is the worst month of the year for infestations?

October, without hesitation, for rodents. The first cold snap triggers the entrances, and the gap between a well-sealed house and a porous house becomes visible within a few nights.

Can we intervene in the middle of winter?

Yes, and it’s often the best time. No spans in structures, less mobile animals, unobstructed attic access. The only obstacle is snow on the roof for outdoor work.

Do you have to wait to see the animal to call?

No. Traces are enough: excrement, nocturnal noises, packed insulation, crooked vent screen. Waiting for a direct observation wastes weeks.

My neighbour had it treated, am I protected?

Not at all. Rodents move from one building to another, and a treatment at the neighbour’s house sometimes pushes the population to the house next door. The only protection that can be used is physical. In the areas of semi-detached and rows, we recommend a coordinated intervention between neighbours, otherwise everyone pays in turn for the same group of animals.

How often should I redo an inspection?

Once a year on a healthy house, preferably in September. Twice if the building has already experienced an infestation or if it is bordered by a wooded area, a stream or a construction site.

A calendar is only useful if it is used before the problem rather than after. Nova Extermination teams plan preventive inspections according to these cycles throughout the South Shore, from Longueuil to Saint-Hyacinthe, and September remains the month when a visit costs the least for what it avoids.

Each species follows a tight cycle.
