Nine times out of ten, we are told about a field mouse. Nine times out of ten, it’s something else. This confusion would not matter if the three species behaved in the same way, but this is not the case: one lives in buildings all year round, the other enters the fall and leaves, and the third almost never puts a paw inside. The deer mouse also poses a health question that the other two do not ask, since it is the main reservoir of hantavirus in Canada according to the National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases record. Knowing which one you have changes the treatment, and sometimes the cleaning protocol.

What the word field mouse really means in Quebec

In common usage, field mouse does not refer to any specific species. The term serves as a catch-all for any small rodent seen outside. In fact, the animal that Quebecers call field mouse is most often the field vole.

The field vole, what is commonly known as a field mouse: stocky body, short tail, ears buried in the coat.

The vole does not look like a mouse. It measures 90 to 125 millimetres in total, including the tail, and this tail is short, only 35 to 65 millimetres. The body is stocky, rounded, the muzzle short, and the ears almost disappear into the dark brown to greyish-brown coat. It weighs 30 to 70 grams, significantly more than a house mouse, and its mass increases in winter.

It lives in wet meadows, herbaceous marshes, peat bogs and fallow fields. In the forest, it is uncommon. In a house, it is rare, and when it enters it, it is by accident, often in a garage or shed adjoining a fallow lot. Its population follows cycles of three to four years, with densities that range from zero to 220 individuals per hectare. In peak years, calls explode, and it is damage to land and flower beds, not damage to buildings.

The house mouse is the only one that really lives in homes

Mus musculus is the commensal species par excellence. In Quebec, it lives mainly in homes and farms, and it adapts to warehouses, agricultural fields and wastelands.

The common mouse: tail almost as long as the body, large ears, grey belly without contrast.

It measures from 140 to 190 millimetres in total, including a tail of 75 to 100 millimetres, almost as long as the body. It weighs from 12 to 30 grams. The back is ochre-brown, the belly dark grey, without any clear demarcation. The ears are large and clearly visible, the tail scaly and bare.

Its reproduction rate explains why a delay of three weeks changes everything in a file. Gestation lasts 19 days, the litter has 4 to 7 young, sexual maturity occurs between one and a half and two months, and a female can produce 8 to 10 litters per year under favorable conditions. A single female in October becomes a colony in February.

This is the species that almost all of our residential interventions target, and the one that our page on mouse extermination deals with. It is also the species that circulates in the cavities of a finished basement without ever showing itself.

The deer mouse, and what it carries

The deer mouse, or white-footed mouse according to the species of the Peromyscus group, is the one that we see the least and that we should be most wary of.

It measures 15 to 20.5 centimetres, weighs 15 to 25 grams, and its tail is 6.5 to 9.5 centimetres. The sign that does not deceive: the legs and belly are pure white, clearly separated from the brown back. The eyes are large and black, the ears large. Once you have seen it, you no longer confuse it.

It lives in the woods and forest areas of southern Quebec, mainly south of the St. Lawrence, and its range extends northward. It enters cottages, sheds, garages and attics in the fall, not in the middle of summer. A door-to-door visit on the edge of a wooded area on the South Shore receives them almost every year.

The health update is as follows. It is the main reservoir of hantavirus in Canada, and an important carrier of the bacteria responsible for Lyme disease, with a single individual that can harbor up to 270 ticks. The National Microbiology Laboratory has confirmed 168 cases of hantavirus in Canada since 1994, including six in Quebec since 2019, with an average of about five cases per year across Canada. The case fatality rate for pulmonary syndrome is between 30 and 38 per cent.

These figures say two things. The risk remains low in frequency. It is serious in severity. The practical consequence is simple: never sweep rodent droppings dry in a cottage or attic. Air out for 30 minutes, wear a filtering mask, rubber gloves and goggles, and moisten with bleach one part bleach to nine parts water before picking up. Our post-infestation decontamination protocol follows this sequence.

Criteria

Common mouse

Deer mouse

Vole (the “field mouse”)

Total length

140 to 190 mm

150 to 205 mm

90 to 125 mm

Tail

75 to 100 mm, naked and scaly

65 to 95 mm, bicolour

35 to 65 mm, short

Weight

12 to 30 g

15 to 25 g

30 to 70 g

Belly

Dark grey, without contrast

Bright white, distinctly separated

Greyish brown

Ears

Large, well set

Large, very conspicuous

Small, buried in hair

Main habitat

Houses, farms, warehouses

Woodlands, cottages, sheds

Fields, wastelands, wet meadows

Breeding

8 to 10 litters per year

Seasonal

April to October

Health issue

, Health, allergens,

Hantavirus, Lyme disease,

ground damage

Recognizing the species without having to catch it

The deer mouse can be recognized by the sharp contrast between the brown back and the white belly.

You don’t need to hold the animal to decide. Three clues are enough in most cases.

The place, first of all. An activity in a kitchen, cupboards, pantry or wall cavity in the city refers to the common mouse, almost without exception. An activity in a cottage, a wood shed or an attic on the edge of a wooded area points to the deer mouse. Galleries on the surface of the lawn, tunnels under the snow visible in spring, gnawed bark at the base of shrubs: that’s the vole, and the backrest is settled outside.

Then the season. The vole is visible in spring, when the melting reveals its galleries. The deer mouse arrives with the first cold weather of October. The common mouse has no season: it is there all year round, with a peak of activity in the autumn.

Finally, the tracks. The excrement of the common mouse measures from 4 to 7 millimeters, pointed at both ends, and is found high up, on shelves, in drawers, along the baseboards. Those of the vole are shorter and more rounded, on the ground, near the galleries. The guide to differentiation between rats, mice and field mice details the morphological comparison, and our interventions on the field mouse deal mainly with field cases.

My rule of thumb can be summed up in one sentence: a rodent found in a cupboard is never a field mouse, and a rodent found in a flower bed is almost never a house mouse.

Frequently asked

questions

Does a mouse trap work on a vole?

Badly. The vole is larger and heavier, and devices calibrated for Mus musculus injure it without capturing it. Field treatment relies on something else.

Is deer mouse dangerous to handle?

Do not handle it. Neither it nor its dry excrement. The risk does not come from a bite but from inhaling contaminated dust.

Can you have both species at the same time?

Yes, in buildings on the edge of woods. This is common in areas of the South Shore that have developed on the edge of agricultural land since 2015.

Why does my exterminator want to know where I saw the animal?

Because the place determines the species, and the species determines both the device, the entry point to be sought and the cleaning protocol. A precise answer wins a visit.

Can voles damage the house?

Indirectly. They gnaw on roots and bark, dig under patio slabs and curbs, and their galleries make it easier to sag. The building itself is of little interest to them.

Should a mouse found dead be analyzed?

No, unless advised by a doctor in the context of respiratory symptoms after exposure. Visual identification is sufficient to decide on the cleaning protocol, and it is this protocol that protects, not the diagnosis of the animal.

The chalet closed all winter, what is the right reflex in spring?

Open doors and windows before entering, let it air out for a good half hour, and do not sweep or vacuum anything until you have moistened the surfaces. This is exactly the risk situation for which the instructions exist.

Naming the animal correctly is not a matter of vocabulary. It is what decides the device, where to look for the entrance and the level of protection when cleaning up. Our teams make this identification every time they visit the South Shore, from Boucherville to Saint-Bruno, and the pest calendar indicates when each species appears.

Three species, three behaviours, a single word in everyday conversation.
