In Chambly, on the South Shore, a family restaurant located in a wooden heritage building in the heart of the city&#8217;s historic sector had to call on our services after observing ants in the kitchen and dining room. Located near the Chambly basin and the century-old houses of the neighboring neighborhood of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, this restaurant had a venerable wooden structure but vulnerable to wood-boring insects. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaextermination.com\/en\/exterminator-chambly\/\">team of exterminators in Chambly<\/a> responded quickly to protect both the reputation of the establishment and the integrity of the historic building.   <\/p>\n<h2>Diagnosis in the context of restoration and heritage buildings<\/h2>\n<p>The diagnosis was carried out before the opening of the restaurant, allowing access to all areas without compromising customer service. The inspection paid particular attention to the risk areas specific to a restaurant: the kitchen with its significant humidity variations, the solid wood food storeroom, the basement service rooms and the exterior walls exposed to the seasonal humidity of the pool. Active galleries have been discovered in the solid wood joists in the basement, in the shear walls between the kitchen and the hall, and in the historic wooden window frames. The frass found under several old pine floor planks confirmed a long-standing infestation, probably established two to three seasons ago. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaextermination.com\/en\/ants\/carpenter-ants\/\">extermination of carpenter ants<\/a> in a heritage building requires an approach that respects the structure while being incisive enough to eliminate the colony permanently.    <\/p>\n<h2>Respectful treatment of the historic building<\/h2>\n<p>The heritage nature of the building guided the choice of intervention methods. The injection of insecticidal gel as a bait was preferred to generalized spraying, in order to limit any interaction with old varnished woods and historical decorative elements. The injections were carried out with precision in the identified galleries, using small diameter probes to avoid leaving marks on the period wood. In the kitchen and food preparation areas, only products registered for use in food environments were used, applied exclusively to wall spaces and not to work surfaces. On the outside, the wooden shingles on the fa\u00e7ade had starting areas that were treated by injection after agreement with the owner&#8217;s agreement. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaextermination.com\/en\/exterior-treatment\/\">exterior insect treatment<\/a> was applied around the perimeter to protect the foundation, using formulations with low visual impact to preserve the aesthetics of the building.     <\/p>\n<h2>Compliance with MAPAQ hygiene standards and documentation<\/h2>\n<p>An essential aspect of responding to a food service setting is documentation for regulatory compliance. The intervention report submitted to the owner included all the information required for MAPAQ inspections: products used with their MSDSs, specific treatment areas, waiting times before reusing spaces and corrective recommendations. A follow-up inspection was scheduled in the month following the treatment, with a report of the results to be kept in the establishment&#8217;s compliance file. The owner also received practical recommendations for day-to-day risk management, including the importance of never storing damp organic materials in the basement and properly ventilating storage spaces. The owner pointed out the total absence of ants since the week following the treatment.
