- The magic line: Make a chalk line on the path of the ants. As soon as they do so, it will be impossible for them to cross it
- Sugar and salt mixture: Although ants love sweet products, salt horrifies them, once they taste it, they won’t want to go near it!
- White vinegar: Spray pure or diluted white vinegar on common areas of ants, the strong smell will repel them!
- Homemade products that ants hate: You can spread several types of foods that repel them. Either lemon, lavender, cinnamon, peppermint, basil leaves, cayenne pepper, garlic, or almost any spice that ends up in your kitchen!
Did you know?
Ants appeared during the Cretaceous period, they lived in the company of dinosaurs! According to a study by Harvard and the Universities of Florida, they date back more than 130 million years, so they survived the Tertiary Era, the area that eradicated the dinosaurs, as well as the Ice Age.
Methods used for house ant extermination
To effectively exterminate house ants, it is necessary to eliminate the workers but also the queen (or queens when there are several nests in the house). Sometimes the queen is in the mother colony outside, while the satellite nests are in your home. For a house ant extermination, bait can be placed on the floors of the house that the ants will bring back to others as well as to the queen. An insecticide can also be applied to at-risk surfaces.
We offer this house ant extermination service at an affordable price in all cities on the South Shore of Montreal. We master the techniques to carry out a house ant extermination, and we use insecticides approved by the Ministry of the Environment.
PLUGGING OF ENTRANCES
Unlike other exterminators, we do not just exterminate house ants quickly. If you wish, we will prevent their return by sealing the entry points (cracks and holes around windows, doors, baseboards, etc.). We’ll walk around your home and inspect all the potentially at-risk areas, then seal them.

Nova Extermination’s ant exterminators have a license in good standing from the Régie du Bâtiment du Québec (RBQ: 5734-75930-01) as well as from the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST) to carry out the necessary sealing work. We are also protected by comprehensive liability insurance to carry out this work.

Daily presence for house ants
The fragrant house ant Tapinoma sessile is the most common in Quebec cuisine. In Longueuil and the surrounding area, our interventions mainly concern condominiums and triplexes in Old Longueuil. In Brossard and the southern South Shore, kitchens in homes in sectors A to R are the priority areas treated in the spring. Our service on the South Shore applies targeted bait and perimeter barrier treatment. In Boucherville and the surrounding area, single-family homes in the Pierre-Boucher sector mobilize our teams in May and June. Further east, in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Haut-Richelieu, heritage buildings with old wood floors are the focus of spring invasions. In Saint-Hyacinthe and the agri-food sector, the kitchens of downtown residences and restaurants account for the bulk of seasonal calls.
Frequently Asked Questions: House Ants
How do I know if I have house ants rather than another species?
The house ant, or odorous ant, gives off a characteristic smell of coconut or rot when crushed, which helps to identify it. It is small (2 to 3 mm), dark brown, and forms trails to sweet food sources in the kitchen. In Boucherville as in Sainte-Julie, it is often noticed near counters and pantries.
Why do house ants enter my home?
They mainly look for sweet food, humidity and sheltered nesting sites, especially in rainy weather or during hot weather. They like to set up their nests under floors, behind walls, in insulation or near pipes. Once a trail is established to your kitchen, the colony will return to it as long as the source is not cut.
Are house ants dangerous?
They do not sting or damage wood, but they do contaminate food and surfaces as they travel between garbage and the pantry. The main problem is therefore hygiene and the nuisance of their presence in large numbers. An ignored colony may have several satellite nests, making the infestation persistent.
What should I prepare before the intervention against house ants?
We recommend storing food in airtight containers, cleaning up sugary residues, and not crushing or spraying visible tracks before our tour. These leads help our technician locate nests and place bait in the right place. Nova then uses approved products and baiting adapted to the behaviour of this species.
How much should you plan for a house ant treatment?
The price is established on the basis of an evaluation, depending on the extent of the situation and the number of households to be treated in your home. There is no single rate, as each home on the South Shore has a different configuration. The amount is clearly communicated to you before the start of the work, all our services being paid.
Will I be rid of house ants for good?
We aim for sustainable results that are assessed on a case-by-case basis: as this species easily forms satellite nests, a few weeks of monitoring are sometimes necessary. Eliminating colonies with bait and correcting sources of attraction greatly reduces the risk of return. Our technician gives you realistic prevention advice rather than a false promise of absolute elimination.
