The owner of a restaurant with an outdoor terrace in Beloeil, on the South Shore, contacted us urgently in the middle of dinner service: several wasps had appeared aggressively around the terrace tables, disturbing customers and forcing the temporary interruption of outdoor service. Beloeil, bordered by Mont Saint-Hilaire, is a city where the abundant vegetation and proximity to wooded areas create ideal conditions for wasp colonies in the summer. The situation was all the more worrying because the wasps were attracted by the smells of cooking and the sugary drinks left on the tables. Our team answered the call in less than twenty-four hours and organized a complete inspection of the restaurant’s surroundings before opening the next day.
Inspection of the surroundings of the restaurant
The inspection made it possible to locate two active nests in the immediate vicinity of the terrace. The first was housed under the wooden deck of the terrace itself, inside a cavity created by poorly jointed joists above the ground. The second nest had been established in a disused electrical box attached to the back wall of the building, near the kitchen exit. This second location was particularly problematic because of the residual heat released by the wall, which kept the temperature inside the chamber high enough to promote the development of the colony even on cool nights. The species identified was the German wasp, particularly attracted to proteins and sugars, which explained its aggressive behaviour around meals served on the terrace. Treatment in the context of restoration
The particularity of this mandate lay in the need to use methods compatible with a food environment. The treatment was carried out outside of service hours, early in the morning, in compliance with the food hygiene standards in force. For the nest under the terrace, the technician used a powdered insecticide injected under pressure into the cavities between the joists, avoiding any contamination of the terrace surfaces themselves. The disused electrical chamber was treated by powder injection directly inside after the residual power was cut off, then hermetically sealed once the colony had been neutralized. Targeted spraying of registered insecticide completed the treatment on the perimeter of the deck, systematically avoiding the preparation and service areas. Following the removal of the nests, our technician carried out an audit of the attraction factors present in the vicinity of the restaurant. An exterior insect treatment at the edge of the deck was applied as an additional layer of protection.
