A retail store specializing in sporting goods, located in a commercial area of Marieville on the South Shore, called on our services after several customers were inconvenienced by wasps at the store’s main entrance. The density of foot traffic in the vicinity of the building made the situation potentially dangerous, especially for customers allergic to Hymenoptera bites. The city of Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, neighboring Marieville, was also experiencing a high level of wasp activity at the end of the summer season. The store manager wanted a discreet intervention that would not disrupt opening hours. Nova Extermination has scheduled an inspection visit outside of peak hours to assess the situation without inconveniencing customers.
Nest location and diagnosis
Inspection revealed that the main nest was installed in the cavity between the decorative concrete wall at the entrance to the store and the façade of the building. A second point of activity was spotted in an ornamental shrub at the corner of the storefront, where wasps had begun to build a secondary nest that was still poorly developed. The main nest, on the other hand, was in full maturity during the season: grey in colour and with a papery texture, it had several cells visible when you looked through the crack between the wall and the wall. The species identified was the common wasp. The simultaneous presence of a mature nest and a nascent nest indicated that several queens had attempted to establish themselves in the area, likely attracted by the warm, sheltered areas of the south-facing commercial frontage. Our diagnosis made it possible to prioritize the treatment of the mature nest, the main source of the reported bites.
Processing in a commercial context
To limit the disruption of trade, the main intervention was carried out early in the morning, before the doors opened. The technician injected fast-acting insecticidal powder into the crack in the wall, directly targeting the central chamber of the nest. A spray of liquid insecticide was then applied to the entire surface of the wall and to the branches of the ornamental shrub to eliminate the secondary nest and the individuals in flight. A temporary safety perimeter was installed for forty-five minutes to prevent any accidental contact with the product while it was still wet. The next morning, during a second visit before opening, our technicians checked the total absence of activity and proceeded to remove the two nests. In accordance with the recommendations for commercial wasp extermination , the products used are registered by Health Canada and do not leave problematic residues on surfaces accessible to the public.
Prevention and seasonal follow-up
After the nests were removed, all cracks in the decorative wall were sealed with an entry point caulk appropriate for concrete surfaces. The overly bushy ornamental shrub was identified as a breeding factor, and the business manager was instructed to prune it to reduce the dense shade areas that attract queens seeking shelter. An intervention report was submitted with recommendations for the coming seasons, including the importance of monitoring the entrance areas of commercial buildings from the beginning of June to detect nascent colonies before they grow. This experience confirms that a quick and professional response protects not only customers, but also the reputation and daily operations of the business. Wasps are particularly attracted to anything sweet or protein-like: unsealed soft drinks, insufficiently sealed food packaging, and even employees’ perfumes and cosmetics. In a busy commercial environment, it is therefore essential to eliminate these sources of attraction as much as possible to reduce the risk of nesting near the building from one season to the next.
