The biology of bed bugs

  • Colour: Bed bugs vary in colour from brown to reddish hues
  • Length: They measure between 2 and 6 mm and can be seen with the naked eye
  • Conformation: Their bodies are oval and flattened, they can be compared to apple seeds
  • Life cycle: Bed bugs have 7 stages of growth, namely; the egg, the nymph (5 stages) and the adult
  • Lifespan: They live for about 5 to 6 months, but can reach up to 24 months if they go dormant
  • How do they reproduce?

  • Number of eggs: They can lay up to 5 eggs per day for their entire lives
  • Insemination: Unlike other insects, the male will directly pierce the female’s abdomen and inject his spermatozoa into a pouch called Ribag’s orange
  • Hatching: Bed bug eggs take about 10 days to hatch
  • Bed bugs need to drink blood to be fertilized!

How to end bed bugs for good?

  • Conduct a comprehensive home inspection to identify all the places where they are hiding
  • Clean bedding or any other fabric object, then put in the dryer on high heat
  • Put everything that has been cleaned in airtight bags to avoid contamination with other uncleaned fabrics
  • Remove furniture from the walls to allow an exterminator to properly treat the mouldings, electric baseboards and the contours of all furniture
  • Treat at least 2 times at 8 to 12 day intervals to cut the reproductive cycle

Cimex lectularius bed bugs remain one of the most difficult pests to eradicate in Quebec, with pyrethroidal resistance documented since 2018. In Montreal, the boroughs of Côte-des-Neiges, Villeray and Hochelaga concentrate most cases, and the City has required declaration since 2018 for buildings with 8 or more dwellings. The extermination of bed bugs in Longueuil mainly targets the multi-unit dwellings of Chomedey and Pont-Viau. In Longueuil and the surrounding area, Old Longueuil and Saint-Hubert produce the majority of calls. In Brossard, condominiums in sectors P and O are the most affected. Our service on the South Shore combines heat treatment at 50°C and chemical protocol in two passes. In Saint-Hyacinthe, several seniors’ residences and student housing contact us every year.

Bed bug extermination protocol: thermal vs chemical

Cimex lectularius bed bugs are one of the most difficult pests to eradicate in Quebec due to their growing resistance to pyrethroids documented since 2018. Two main protocols give reliable results: the heat treatment at a minimum of 50°C for 90 minutes, which destroys eggs and adults simultaneously, and the combined chemical protocol in two passes spaced 14 days apart, successively using a new generation pyrethroids and an IGR (growth regulator) registered with the PMRA. The choice between the two depends on the sensitivity of the occupants, the nature of the materials (electronic, plants), the surface area and the budget. Heat treatment has the advantage of removing chemical resistance and treating in a single visit, but costs 30-60% more.

Regardless of the method chosen, the preparation of the home by the occupant is decisive. We systematically provide a detailed preparation sheet: all clothes and textiles must be washed at 60°C or dried at high temperature for 30 minutes, then bagged. Furniture infested with more than 30% must be disposed of by authorized emptying. The mattress is encapsulated in a zippered cover certified anti-bed bug for 12 months. Cracks and skirting boards are vacuumed and sealed. The 14, 28 and 60-day follow-up is mandatory: the effectiveness of our guarantee of results depends on compliance with the preparation sheet. No over-the-counter products (aerosol cans, poorly applied diatomaceous earth) permanently eliminate an infestation: on the contrary, they disperse the colony in the neighboring rooms.

Quebec legal framework and tenant/landlord responsibilities

In Quebec, article 1854 of the Civil Code requires the landlord to provide a dwelling in good habitable condition, which includes the eradication of bed bugs as soon as they are reported. The Administrative Housing Tribunal (formerly the Régie du logement) systematically considers bed bugs to be a sanitation problem for which the landlord is responsible, unless there is proof that the tenant introduced them through gross negligence. However, the tenant must actively collaborate in the preparation of the dwelling and allow access to the exterminator. The cost of treatment and decontamination is the responsibility of the owner, but he can be compensated by his building insurance under the heading of damage by vermin. We provide each intervention with a report that complies with the requirements of the TAL: proof of initial infestation, protocol applied, approved products used, dates of passage and written guarantee. In 2018, the City of Montreal also adopted a by-law requiring the reporting of confirmed cases for buildings with 8 or more dwellings.

    Did you know?

Can a bed bug infestation occur even in very well-maintained homes? Simple bad luck can cause a bug to sneak into your clothes in a public place, and then it ends up in your house or apartment.

    Where bed bugs hide

    Frequently Asked Questions: Bed Bugs

What are the signs of a bed bug infestation?

The classic signs are small black spots (droppings) on the seams of the mattress, blood stains on the sheets, brownish moults and punctures aligned with the skin when you wake up. Adult bugs, reddish-brown and the size of an apple seed, can also be spotted in the seams, box springs and behind headboards. In Longueuil and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, these infestations affect all types of housing, unrelated to cleanliness.

How do I prepare my home for a bed bug treatment?

Good preparation is essential for success: washing and drying bedding and clothes at high temperatures, vacuuming thoroughly, and decluttering rooms without moving items from one room to another. Our technician will give you a detailed preparation list before the intervention. A well-prepared housing allows the products to reach all the hiding places of the bugs.

Why are bed bugs so difficult to get rid of yourself?

They hide in tiny cracks, are resistant to many over-the-counter products, and a single female can lay hundreds of eggs, which quickly revives the infestation. Home treatments often move the bugs to other rooms without destroying the eggs. A professional uses approved products and a methodical protocol adapted to their biology.

How many treatments are needed for bed bugs?

In general, more than one visit is required as the products must reach the new bugs from the hatched eggs after the first application. Our technician plans a follow-up to check the effectiveness and retreat the residual fireplaces if necessary. The exact number depends on the extent of the infestation found during the inspection.

What is the price of a bed bug treatment?

The price is established on the basis of an evaluation, depending on the extent of the situation, the number of parts affected and the follow-up visits required. As each infestation is different, no fixed amount can be announced in advance. The price is clearly communicated to you before the start of the work, our services being paid.

Do you offer a warranty against bed bugs?

We aim for sustainable results evaluated on a case-by-case basis through a follow-up protocol, rather than an absolute guarantee that is impossible to honestly ensure for this pest. Success also depends on the customer’s compliance with the preparation instructions. Our technician will explain realistic expectations and measures to avoid a reintroduction.
