Scratching in the attic: rodent or animal?

Do you have a rodent in the attic? Maybe mice or squirrels? Scratching noises are the first indication that an opportunistic rodent has infiltrated your home (walls, attic, attic, basement, attic, etc.) to make it its own.

When the noises intensify and you spot droppings, it is time to take action quickly. Rodents reproduce quickly: a single pair of mice can produce more than fifty offspring in a year. Our team offers a complete rodent extermination service that combines diagnosis, targeted treatment and closure of entry points.

Unfortunately, these unwanted little mammals don’t just nest, they also cause serious damage to your home (e.g., chewing on electrical cables) and potentially the health of the people who live there.

If you hear a beast scratching in the walls or ceiling, don’t waste time justifying these noises. If you own pets, this may well be the reason why your pets bark or meow. Call an extermination company for an evaluation and to quickly regain control of your home.

Find out why it is necessary to exterminate rodents in the attic before being the victim of an infestation of large and small rodents.

How a rodent in the attic is harming your health

Managing the different species of rodents is important when you are a homeowner. In addition to the damage they can cause to the building structure and wiring in the walls, they also carry dangerous diseases.

In order to reduce the bill, both on the health of your building and yours, you must get rid of the animal in the attic as quickly as possible. We strongly recommend that you entrust this work to a certified exterminator. Most of the time, it takes more than a few bait traps to regain control over a small animal infestation.

A rodent has infiltrated the attic?

Each rodent has its own technique! Another reason why it is good to entrust pest control to an extermination service. Here are some wise tips to get rid of pests that infiltrate the attic of Quebec residences.

A gray mouse is a type of rodent that can infiltrate the attic of a house

In an urban area like the South Shore, we see a lot of cases in semi-detached houses and duplexes where the attic is shared with the neighbour. If you are in Longueuil and the noises start again every night, our exterminator in Longueuil will come during the day for an inspection and identify the exact entrance.

How do you get rid of mice in the attic?

Has one or more mice infiltrated the attic of your house? Are you worried about a mouse infestation? There are many methods for a mouse exterminator to effectively get rid of this type of rodents. For those who have no expertise in mouse extermination, the use of the trap door is the most well-known method. However, it is not necessarily the most effective if it is not combined with other methods.

The number of mouse presences also makes the trap ineffective, unless you have the patience to check the trap every day until there are no more mice left.

A combination of techniques

Exterminators use a combination of techniques to regain control over a mouse invasion. The first step is to find all rodent access points and exit points and then seal them. Then, the use of traps and rodenticides at strategic points to exterminate the invader.

Finally, an exterminator will take the time to decontaminate the area in order to eliminate the harmful spores. Also, a mouse can produce several droppings per day and they are also very harmful to your health. Protect yourself if you have to handle them.

If the infestation has lasted for more than two weeks or if you locate several nests, using a mouse exterminator becomes the quickest and most durable solution. Commercial baits are seldom sufficient for an already established colony.

How do you get rid of rats in the attic?

For a rat exterminator, the technique for getting rid of them is slightly different from that of mice. Since rats are larger, some rodenticides are not effective against them. The main technique for rats is therefore capture with the use of metal cages. Avoid poison so as not to create bad and strong smells.

For rats, a smoke test should also be done to check the tightness of the plumbing and decontaminate when the problem is fixed.

A squirrel jumping from a tree is a rodent that can infiltrate the attic of a house

How do you get rid of squirrels in the attic?

Like rats, squirrels require special attention. It is therefore a combination of methods, including the use of special capture devices. You also have to find the entry and exit points and block them. Finally, it is necessary to decontaminate in order to remove the smell of squirrels that attract other squirrels.

How do you get rid of skunks and raccoons?

Never try to get rid of skunks and raccoons on your own. These are wild animals that carry dangerous and even fatal diseases.

Communicable diseases

Raccoons and skunks, for example, can transmit rabies to humans. If you are dealing with a family of raccoons or skunks in your home, it is of paramount importance to call on wildlife capture specialists.

To get rid of these undesirables, expert exterminators use special traps designed for these animals. They are then released and relocated to the wild more than 25 km away. Learn more about how to safely keep raccoons away .

What damage according to the species?

Not all rodents cause the same damage in an attic. Understanding the typical damage of each species helps to anticipate restoration costs and the priority of intervention. The table crosses six types of damage with the four most common species in Quebec.

,

Very

Damage Type : Mouse, Rat , Squirrel Raccoon
Gnawed electrical wiring Very common common Common (ducts) Rare
Insulation compression Frequent Very common Very common (galleries) Very common (sleeping areas)
Soiling of insulation Very common Very common Common Massive (community latrines)
Holes in drywall Small holes Large holes Rare Possible (weakened ceiling)
Breaking shingles or soffits Rare Rare Very common Very common
Airborne pathogens Hantavirus, salmonella, Leptospirosis, Hantavirus, Low roundworm, leptospirosis

Gnawed electrical wiring is the most dangerous cause in the short term: pyrolysis of a duct can start a fire in a few hours. Raccoon latrines pose the greatest long-term health risk because of roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis), which can survive for several years in the environment.

Three typical cases according to the season

Noises that appear in September-October

The most common case in Quebec. Temperatures drop below 10 °C at night and rodents seek winter shelter. Mice and squirrels dominate at this time, sometimes raccoons in semi-rural areas. Priority intervention: complete exterior inspection to identify the point of entry (almost always visible with traces of grease or hair), then immediate closure with welded mesh. If the animal has already entered, unidirectional device for 5 to 10 days then permanent closure. Typical cost and duration: 2 to 4 weeks follow-up, moderate intervention.

Noises that appear in March-April

The second important peak is females looking for a calving site, or young emancipated from the previous year dispersing. The period is delicate: if a female has given birth, exclusion becomes forbidden until the young have fledged for protected species (swallows, certain birds), or simply inhumane for rodents. Intervention: confirm the presence of a litter by prolonged listening (24 h), postpone physical exclusion for 6 to 8 weeks if necessary, use non-lethal scarers in the meantime to encourage the mother to move spontaneously.

Discovery of significant damage without recent noise

This is often the case during a renovation or a pre-purchase inspection: shredded insulation, old droppings, gnawed wires, but no more active noise. Diagnosis: infestation over several months, animal probably gone or dead. Intervention: complete decontamination with removal of soiled insulation, structural inspection (check that gnawed wires do not pose an active risk), disinfection with diluted bleach, closure of all identified accesses. The cost can be significant (insulation replacement + disinfection) and often justifies a professional quote.

Do it yourself or call a pro?

Several situations lend themselves to an in-house intervention, others require a certified professional. The distinction is based on three criteria: the species identified, the number of individuals present, and the accessibility of the attic.

Cases adapted to the home intervention

Isolated mouse or field mouse (one or two individuals), identifiable and easily sealable access points, attic accessible by a standard hatch, no signs of range. Trapping with cages or bar traps, baiting with borax-sugar for mice, and closing accesses with steel wool and wire mesh cover the majority of light cases. Material investment: less than $50 for basic supplies.

Cases that warrant a professional

Presence of a confirmed litter, animal larger than a mouse (rat, squirrel, raccoon), noises in inaccessible areas (crawl space, cathedral ceiling, cavity wall), detection of gnawed electrical wires, or recurrence after two weeks of home attempts. A certified exterminator has delayed-action rodenticide baits not sold to individuals, one-way devices, and a multi-week tracking protocol that guarantees complete elimination. Higher cost but superior durability.

Cases that require specialized decontamination

Any prolonged infestation (more than 3 months), visible accumulation of droppings, or the presence of massive fluorescent urine under UV lamps. The removal of soiled insulation and the disinfection of joists require dedicated equipment (HEPA vacuum cleaners, complete PPE) and compliance with CNESST procedures that individuals cannot guarantee.

Questions

How do I identify the species that is itching in my attic?

Five species are frequently found in Quebec attics and attics. The table crosses noise, period of activity, size of droppings and location to identify the species without having to go up to inspect closely.

Species Characteristic noise Period of activity Size of droppings Typical location
Mouse Fast and discreet scratching Strictly nocturnal 3 to 5 mm, made of elongated rice grain Interior walls, pantry, behind appliances
Rat or Norway rat Regular drumming, heavier noises Nocturnal, sometimes twilight 12 to 18 mm, thicker and coarser Basement, crawl space, damp storage areas
Squirrel Noisy running, rolling sounds Daytime (morning and late afternoon) 7 to 10 mm, more rounded droppings Attic, soffits, attic
Raccoon Heavy rolls, displacements of several metres Strictly nocturnal Large and tubular (5 to 8 cm), visible fruit remains Chimney, attic, under gallery
Skunk Dull noises, sometimes light scratching Nocturnal, possible twilight exits Tubular 5 to 8 cm, insect debris visible Under gallery, porch, shed (rarely in the attic)

What damage can a rodent cause in the attic?

Three types of damage dominate: compression and soiling of cellulose or mineral wool insulation (rodents dig galleries that reduce the R-value), gnawing of electrical cables (a documented cause of residential fires in Quebec), and contamination by droppings and urine that infiltrates the ceiling plasterboard. A prolonged infestation almost always requires complete insulation replacement and remediation, in addition to extermination.

When do rodents settle in attics?

The peak of installations is between the end of September and the beginning of November, when night-time temperatures drop below 10 °C and rodents seek winter shelter. A second wave occurs in March-April, either for the first litter of the year, or to flee a cold basement. The ideal preventive inspections are carried out at the end of August (before the mass arrival) and at the end of February (before the calving).

How do you prevent rodents from accessing the attic?

Three preventive actions to be applied in this order cover the majority of residential cases:

  1. Seal all openings larger than 6 mm with a resistant material: steel wool in the pipe penetrations, welded mesh on the vents, anti-rodent expanding foam at the junctions.
  2. Install metal crow cutters on roof soffits and vents, in addition to the wire mesh.
  3. Inspect the roof-exterior wall junctions annually, a preferred entry point for mice and squirrels.

Caulking should use a material that rodents cannot chew on: avoid ordinary expanding foam, paper or wood.

How much does an attic extermination procedure cost?

The cost varies depending on the species and the severity of the infestation. An intervention against mice or rats with trapping and closing of access is generally in a moderate residential range. Cases involving a raccoon or squirrel with scope require one-way devices, multiple visits, and sometimes scaffolding, which increases the cost. Decontamination of insulation after a prolonged infestation is a separate item. An on-site quote is the only way to get an accurate figure for a given situation.

Do you really need to replace insulation after an infestation?

Yes in the majority of cases, for two reasons. First, rodents deposit urine and faeces which durably impregnate the fibers and give off odors and pathogens (hantavirus, leptospirosis, salmonella). Secondly, the insulation compressed by the galleries loses up to 50% of its R-value, which translates into higher heating costs. Local replacement around visible nests may be sufficient in short infestations; Long cases (several months) require complete removal and decontamination of the joists.

When should you call an attic exterminator?

Four signs call a certified exterminator without delay:

  • Noises that persist more than a week after the installation of homemade traps, a sign of an established colony.
  • Spotting of gnawed electrical wires, risk of immediate fire which justifies a quick intervention.
  • Smell of urine or suspected corpse in an inaccessible area, which requires secure identification and removal.
  • Presence of a litter (young with a high-pitched call, mother that returns at regular intervals), where the chronology of exclusion becomes critical.

The professional intervention combines identification of the species, adapted trapping, closure of accesses and a 4 to 6-week follow-up plan to confirm the end of the activity.
